Trump Takes the Lead Over Harris in Michigan, Strong Support from Independents and Black Voters

Former President Donald Trump is showing strong momentum in the key battleground state of Michigan following his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a new Insider Advantage poll. The poll, conducted on Wednesday and part of Thursday, reveals that 49% of likely voters in Michigan support Trump, while 48% back Harris. Although the margin is narrow, it highlights Trump’s ability to maintain a competitive edge in one of the most pivotal states for the 2024 presidential election.

Trump’s appeal to independent voters is particularly notable, with independents favoring him over Harris by five points. Insider Advantage pollster Matt Towery emphasized the importance of this, stating that the debate did little to change the landscape, especially among independent voters. "It appears that the debate had little or no impact on the contest, particularly among independent voters in this particular state," Towery noted, underscoring Trump’s steady grip on the middle-of-the-road electorate.

The poll also brings into focus Trump’s growing support among Black voters, with 20% backing the former president—a significant figure in a demographic that has traditionally leaned toward the Democratic Party. Towery acknowledged that this may be an aberration but noted that similar trends have been observed in recent national surveys. The New York Times/Siena College poll published Sunday showed Trump securing 17% of support among Black registered voters, while a Marist/NPR/PBS News poll from Friday placed him even higher at 24%.

These figures reflect a broader trend in which Trump’s message resonates across various voter groups, despite the mainstream media's efforts to downplay his appeal. His ability to attract support from Black voters, a group long taken for granted by the Democrats, is a testament to the effectiveness of his outreach and the failure of the Biden-Harris administration to deliver on its promises.

In addition, polling conducted by Insider Advantage in collaboration with the Trafalgar Group on debate night showed that while a majority of respondents thought Harris won the debate by a margin of 55%-43%, this did not translate into gains among undecided voters. The race remains highly competitive, with support tied at 48%-48% on the national level.

As the 2024 election draws closer, Trump’s strength in Michigan and other battleground states continues to signal trouble for Democrats. His ability to connect with independents and attract a significant portion of the Black vote could prove decisive in these closely contested areas. While the race remains tight, the former president’s growing coalition of support across various voter groups indicates that his path to victory is clearer than ever.

This poll, along with others, underscores what Trump has maintained all along—that his message of America First, economic revival, and securing the nation’s future resonates with voters who are tired of the status quo. As the Biden administration struggles with issues like inflation, border security, and foreign policy missteps, Trump’s candidacy offers a compelling alternative, one that could very well propel him back into the White House in 2024.
