Sen. Ron Johnson explains why he's running for re-election after initially stating that he wouldn't

By Office of Senator Ron Johnson -

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) released a statement saying that he will run for reelection in 2022, defying his 2016 promise to spend only two terms in Congress.

The Wisconsin senator mentioned the two-term promise in a Wall Street Journal piece.

"I stated during the 2016 election that this would be my final election and term," Johnson remarked on Sunday. "That was my clear preference, as well as my wife's because we both want a healthy private life."

However, Johnson, who was a close ally of former President Donald Trump while in office, stated that neither he nor his wife "anticipated the Democrats' complete takeover of govt and the disastrous policies they have already inflicted on America and the world, let alone those they threaten to enact in the long term."
