In a bold affirmation of President Donald Trump’s commitment to U.S. energy dominance, Doug Burgum, the nominee for Interior Secretary, made a compelling case before a Senate panel on Thursday. Burgum highlighted how harnessing America’s vast fossil fuel and energy resources can strengthen national security, promote global peace, and restore the country’s leadership on the world stage.

Burgum, the former governor of North Dakota and a seasoned advocate for energy independence, echoed Trump’s vision to counter the influence of autocratic regimes like Russia, Iran, and Venezuela. These nations, he noted, often exploit their fossil fuel reserves without regard for environmental safeguards, financing instability and undermining peace. “Trump’s energy dominance strategy is about ensuring that America becomes the world’s foremost energy supplier, reducing dependency on nations with oppressive regimes,” Burgum said.
Taking aim at the Biden administration’s reliance on renewable energy, Burgum voiced concerns about its impact on grid reliability. “Renewables alone cannot sustain the growing demand for baseload power,” he said. He argued that coal, along with other reliable sources, is essential for powering data centers and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI).
“This is something that is critical to our national security,” Burgum stressed. “Without baseload power, we’re going to lose the AI arms race to China.”
The remarks underscore Trump’s broader vision of energy policy as a cornerstone of both domestic strength and international strategy. By ensuring the U.S. remains self-reliant and energy-rich, Burgum contended, America can lead in innovation while ensuring adversaries cannot use energy as a geopolitical weapon.
If confirmed, Burgum will oversee a staggering half-billion acres of federal land and extensive offshore territories. These areas account for approximately one-quarter of the U.S.’s annual oil production, making them pivotal in Trump’s energy plan.
Under the Biden administration, new oil and gas leasing on federal lands was significantly scaled back to curb climate change. Yet, Burgum noted, oil production still surged to record levels as companies tapped into previously leased reserves. Trump’s approach aims to build on this momentum by increasing leasing opportunities while maintaining America’s strong environmental standards.
“President Trump understands that responsible development of our energy resources doesn’t just power our economy; it powers our allies, weakens our adversaries, and ensures our security,” Burgum said.
Burgum’s testimony offers a preview of how the Trump administration will leverage America’s energy resources to bolster its leadership on the global stage. By prioritizing energy dominance, fostering innovation, and ensuring grid reliability, Trump is setting the stage for a more secure and prosperous America.
As Burgum put it, “Energy is not just about lights and heat—it’s about power, security, and peace.”
With this vision, President Trump is reaffirming his commitment to making America great again, not just for today, but for generations to come.
